Welcome to Ducky's Motorcycle Rental Frequently Asked Questions Page
Find answers to the most common questions about renting motorcycles in Bangkok. If you don’t see your question below, contact us or call (+66) 061-032-5122.
To rent a motorcycle from Ducky's, you'll need to provide the following documents:
- Valid passport - It must not be expired and have a valid visa for Thailand.
- Home country driver's license - Must be valid and not expired. Your license should be readable and in your name.
- International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended - While not always strictly enforced by police, an IDP is required for insurance coverage. If you're involved in an accident without an IDP, your insurance becomes void, leaving you personally liable for all damages. We strongly recommend obtaining one before your trip. IDPs are easy to get from your home country's licensing authority.
Having all these documents ready before arrival speeds up the rental process significantly. Most rentals take 15-30 minutes once you have everything.
Technically, Thai law requires a valid motorcycle license for riding motorcycles in Thailand. However, most rental shops (including many in Bangkok) don't strictly enforce this for tourists.
Here's the important distinction:
- Police enforcement: You might be stopped and fined ฿500-1,000 if you don't have a license, though enforcement is inconsistent
- Insurance coverage: This is where it matters. If you're involved in an accident and don't have a valid motorcycle license, your rental insurance becomes invalid, and you're personally liable for all damages
Yes. Minimum age is 21 years old for renting any motorcycle from Ducky's.
Thai law sets the minimum at 18, but we enforce 21 for several practical reasons:
- Insurance requirements: Our commercial insurance policies require renters to be 21+
- Rider experience: Our data shows that riders under 21 have higher accident rates in unfamiliar traffic
- Bangkok traffic: Bangkok is genuinely chaotic. We want renters old enough to have some driving experience before tackling it.
Yes. A second rider can be added, as long as they meet the same age and license requirements as the primary renter.
All of the following are included FREE with every rental - no additional charges:
- Full-face or 3/4 helmet - ECE or DOT certified for maximum protection
- Riding jacket - Mesh jacket for ventilation (Thailand is hot!) with armor inserts
- Gloves - Full-finger riding gloves
- Phone holder - Secure phone mount on handlebars
- Luggage storage - Varies by bike
We include this gear at no additional charge because we want our customers to ride smart and ride safe. We never want someone on a budget to skimp on protection because they can't afford it. A proper jacket and gloves will save your skin (literally) in an accident.
Yes. All of our rental motorcycles are equipped with a USB charger with dual charging slots so you can keep your phone, action camera, and any other devices you need to keep charged while on your Thailand motorcycle adventure.
Yes. All motorcycles are equipped with storage options. The type varies by model:
Storage options by motorcycle type:
- Adventure Tourers: Top box + optional hard panniers for long-distance touring
- Scramblers: Top box + optional soft saddlebags
- Cruisers: Soft saddlebags
- Dual-Sport: Top box
- All Motorcycles - Waterproof seat bags are available at no additional charge if you need to add extra luggage capacity to any of our bikes or simply prefer one over side-mounted luggae.
No, there is no daily kilometer limit. All of our motorcycle rentals include unlimited milage so you can ride as far as you want.
Practical considerations:
- Fuel consumption: Depending on your bike and riding style, you'll get 20-28 km per liter. Budget for fuel stops every 150-250 km
- Fatigue: Riding in Thai heat and traffic is tiring. Most riders find 300-400 km per day is comfortable; beyond 500 km gets exhausting
- Road conditions: Thailand has excellent highways but also remote mountain roads. Pace yourself accordingly
- Border crossings: If crossing into Malaysia, Cambodia or Laos, plan for time at borders (1-3 hours)
Our suggestion: For safety, avoid riding more than 7 to 8 hours per day, especially if you're new to Thailand. Stop regularly for water, food, and rest.
Yes, we offer luggage storage at no charge for the duration of your rental.
Storage details:
- Luggage is stored in a secure storage room
- Security: All items are stored in a locked room. We're not liable for lost or stolen items, but theft is extremely rare
- Retrieval: You can access stored luggage during business hours if needed
Yes, we allow one-way motorcycle rentals anywhere within Thailand, but they must be arranged in advance at the time of pick-up. A return transport fee applies based on the agreed return city, and a higher security deposit of 50,000 THB is required. This deposit is held because the motorcycle isn’t returned to us in person, and we can only complete the final inspection for damage once the bike arrives back at our Bangkok shop a few days later.
Yes. Our cancellation policy is as follows:
- More than 7 days before rental start: Full refund of deposit
- 7 days to 48 hours before start: Deposit is non-refundable, but may be applied to a future rental within 30 days
- Within 48 hours of rental start: Deposit is forfeited and non-transferable
Most of Thailand is open for riding. However, some areas have restrictions:
Areas YOU CAN ride:
- All of Thailand (North, Northeast, Central, South regions)
- Cambodia (with advance notice and approved documentation)
- Laos (with advance notice and approved documentation)
- Malaysia (with advance notice and approved documentation)
Areas with potential restrictions:
- Very remote border regions (occasionally closed for security reasons)
- Some national park roads have speed limits or riding restrictions
- Certain beaches have motorcycle riding bans
International border rides: If you're planning to ride into Cambodia, Laos, or Malaysia:
- Notify us when making your reservation (We require at least 1 week to prepare the necessary documents)
- Most border crossings are straightforward with proper paperwork, however we cannot guarantee successful crossings. Whether you are allowed to enter another country is at the discretion of the immigration agents at the border. It is possible that even with all the proper documentation you may be denied entry for an arbitrary reason.

Quick answer:
- Dry season (Nov-March): Best weather, coolest temperatures, mostly sunny. This is peak season.
- Hot season (April-May): Very hot (35-40°C), some haze. Roads are good but physically exhausting.
- Rainy season (May-Oct): Afternoon storms, roads can be slick. Get 20% discount on rentals during this season. Roads are actually great after rain clears.
Riding in rainy season:
- Bring rain gear
- Roads can be slick - ride more carefully
- Visibility can be reduced - use headlight
- Even in the rainy season it generally only rains for a short time. Just leave yourself some extra time to get to your destination in case you need to pull into a cafe for 30 minutes to wait for a storm to pass.
